Located 60 miles from Captiva (about a 1.5-hour drive), Naples is a mainland wonderland known for its high-end dining, luxury shopping, great sunsets, and nature reserves. Although Naples has the second-highest concentration of millionaires in the United States, there's still a great deal for families and budget travelers to do while visiting.
Things to do in Naples
Like most of the other destinations in our little corner of paradise; the beach dominates life and leisure in Naples. There are also many nature preserves nearby, as well as the Everglades, one of the most unique ecosystems on Earth. Boat tours - especially sunset tours - are quite popular and highly recommended. The Naples Botanical Gardens offer beautiful insight into the region’s flora, and the Naples Pier takes you out over the Gulf of Mexico. Another great way to experience nature is at the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, which sits in the heart of the Everglades ecosystem.
Dining and Nightlife in Naples
Third Street South is the hotspot of Naples for great dining and strolling. You’ll find small cafes, casual dining, excellent high-end cuisine, and great people watching. Take your time walking down the street, taking in all of the sights, sounds, and smells as you find a place that best suites your taste buds at the moment.
One of our favorite new finds is DeRoma’s Gourmet Market and Restaurant located on Highway 41 in Bonita Springs, just north of Naples. If you’ve ever experienced the Eataly markets in New York, Chicago, or Boston, this is the same concept on a slightly smaller scale. A great selection of specialty grocery, deli, or prepared dishes, wines, and gifts, all connected with a very good Italian-themed restaurant.
Shopping in Naples
Again, Third Street South is the epicenter for shopping in Naples. There is a fun open-air Farmer's Market each Saturday and any day is great for strolling down the street from store to store. The landscaping is pure tropical bliss, with colorful flowers and plenty of places to sit and watch the world go by. Many of the boutiques on Third Street South are extremely high-end, unique to the status and culture of the area.
